SEO: Concerned with Google Penguin 4.0?

pdates and changes are inevitable bedfellows of technology and the Internet.  Recently (September 23, 2016) Google rolled out its new core search algorithm in the form of Penguin 4.0.  What does this mean for your website and how can you be sure that your online business and traffic won’t be negatively influenced?  If the following information doesn’t assuage your fears, contact Blindspot Advisors as your premier provider of SEO services in Minnesota.

Hold On

First things first:  this update may not have reached its completion.  Oftentimes these updates are rolled out over a period of weeks in various stages.  We don’t know for sure, but it’s a good idea to give things time to fully flesh out before settling into an “all-clear” mindset.

Follow the Rules

That being said, the overall theme we’re noticing with this rollout is that as long as you’re following best practices for your website, you’re unlikely to notice much of an effect in your keyword ranking or search performance.  If you’re avoiding spam and black-hat tactics (purchasing links, participating in link-exchange networks, etc.), your website and online presence should continue to thrive.  The goal of Penguin is to sniff out and penalize websites that engage in the aforementioned activities, so if you’re keeping your nose of out the Internet mud, you have nothing to worry about.

One last interesting tidbit with Penguin 4.0:  in previous times, an entire site would be penalized if there was spam present anywhere on the site.  Presently, it seems as though only pages exhibiting shady behavior will be penalized while sections following best practices will continue to perform well.

Tidy Up

The takeaway here is to keep your website on the up-and-up and follow Google’s best practices for SEO and link-building if you want your site to perform optimally.  Keep your link profile tidy (regular checks for this are best) and make sure to scan backlinks and rid your site of spam-like links that surface.
